The SAN LUIS VALLEY is in the south central part of Colorado almost halfway between Denver, Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Each is approximately 200 miles away from Alamosa, the business center of the valley and home to Adams State College. Here you will find shopping facilities, a hospital, churches, banks, movies the airport, car rental companies, etc.

To the east is Mount Blanca, the fourth largest peak in the state, looming skyward 14,345 feet, 207 feet higher than famed Pikes Peak. Mount Blanca is in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southern part of the Great Rocky Mountain Range that borders the valley on the north and east. To the west are the beautiful San Juan Mountains, America's Alps! Between these two majestic ranges at 7600 feet lies the world's highest true valley, the San Luis Valley, where it's a rare day that the sun doesn't shine.

The historic Rio Grand River runs through Alamosa as does Highway 160, the shortest, quickest and most scenic route between Los Angeles and Chicago through the Old West. Along this route, which is part of the Old Navajo Trail, at Fort Garland, you'll find the historic fort which was Kit Carson's last command post. Nearby you'll find San Luis, the oldest town in Colorado



Hike trails once trod by the Conquistadors in their search for the fabled Golden Cities and before them, roamed by the Indians. Or just kick back and enjoy the crimson sunsets turning the mountains to scarlet in this land of peace and tranquility.
